In a significant move for classic PC gaming enthusiasts, Atari has purchased the rights to the iconic game RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 from Frontier Developments for a total of $7 million. Atari is no stranger to the RollerCoaster Tycoon series, having published numerous titles in the beloved franchise. The acquisition of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 marks a turning point in the relationship between Atari and Frontier Developments, especially in light of previous legal disputes over unpaid royalties.
Wade Rosen, the Chairman and CEO of Atari, expressed his enthusiasm about integrating this pivotal game into the franchise's larger portfolio, especially as the company celebrates the 25th anniversary with the series creator, Chris Sawyer. Rosen highlighted the acquisition's potential to open up new prospects for Atari, allowing them to continue and expand upon the foundational work established by Frontier. This move is anticipated to greatly benefit fans by enriching the overall RollerCoaster Tycoon experience.
Originally launched in 2004, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 has been a staple in the PC community for two decades, and in 2020, it expanded its reach to the Nintendo Switch platform.
Atari's strategic plan involves not only developing new titles within the series but also broadening both digital and physical distribution channels. In addition, the company is exploring various collaboration opportunities for branding and merchandising, aiming to elevate the RollerCoaster Tycoon series to unprecedented levels of success and fame.
